Product Information

Popping plungers and dramatic color changes make for a way cool lesson on gas solubility, acid-base reaction, indicators, atmospheric pressure, Charles Law, and Avogadro's Law. Kit includes enough materials to repeat this demonstration 25 times. A fume hood is necessary for the preparation of this demonstration.
Ammonia gas is produced inside 60 mL plastic syringes. The tip of the syringe is suspended in a cup of yellow solution. Ammonia is so soluble in water, and the gas is absorbed by the water so rapidly that the pressure inside the syringe drops almost instantaneously.
Because of the lack of pressure in the syringe, the plunger is forced down syringe empties forcefully and again almost immediately. Originally the solution is slightly acidic and is yellow because it contains bromothymol blue, an indicator that is yellow in acid and blue in base. The solution in the cup turns blue as the ammonia changes the pH.
Developed by Michigan chemistry teacher Tim Graham.Grade level: High school.
Includes: NH4OH, HCl, bromothymol blue, syringes, syringe caps, dropper, and instructions.
