Esters are compounds formed by the elimination of water and the bonding of an alcohol and an organic agent. Generally esters have a distinctive odor and many are used in flavorings and perfumes.With this kit, students produce five different esters, each with a distinct fruit fragrance. After preparing the esters, students construct a chart listing the organic acid, alcohol, and resulting ester, as well as the chemical formula of each. Includes: n-butyl alcohol, n-octyl alcohol, Methanol, Ethyl alcohol, Acetic acid, Butyric acid, and instructions.
