Product Information

Backpack Science is an innovative, integrated learning tool that uses inquiry-based activities to build links between science, math and language arts.
The colorful gizmos contained in this clear plastic backpack let kids conduct hands-on explorations of one of their favorite natural manipulatives: sand! There are 4 lesson plans provided which have students explore what sand is made of, properties of wet and dry sand, sand as a habitat and the many uses of sand.
Included are an ant farm, a pail and shovel, Plaster of Paris and more. The backpack also contains instruction cards for 12 other activities which can be done in centers in the classroom or as take-home projects. The book Sand by Pam Miller (softcover, 32 pages) provides an excellent accompaniment to the inquiry-based activities. Developed by teachers Jo-Anne Lake and Michelle Goslin.
Appropriate for Grades Pre-K - 2
