Students will use their understanding of chemistry and chemistry techniques to convert ordinary waste cooking oil into diesel fuel. Both titration and functional groups are addressed in this real-life application. The final products are nontoxic and biodegradable, and the cleaned, dry biodiesel product is road ready for any diesel powered vehicle. Waste vegetable oil and a fume hood are required, but not included. Developed by teacher, Pam Temons, the kit includes instructions and materials for 10 student groups. Grades 9–12.
