Boreal Food Preservation Methods Kit
|
Product Information
Before refrigeration, perishable foods were preserved through the use of dehydration and salt. Today there are new technologies to keep food fresh. This kit lets students conduct labs on six preservation techniques. Developed by Ed Alcamo. Includes materials for 30 students — cloves, cotton swabs, markers, forceps, index cards, iodized salt, vinegar, flint glass vials, petri dishes, sterile discs, nutrient agar, and a teacher’s guide with background information.

| This is one of my favorite microbiology labs. It really shows the kids how microbes flourish on meat, and the effectiveness of various methods of cooking to kill microbes, as well as the effectiveness of a variety of spices. It is reusable (I used the same kit for 9 years), and you just supply the meat and buy replacement spices and agar. It lends itself well to new experiments (different spices, etc.). |
