Using pre-treated taste test strips, students test whether they have inherited the ability to taste a harmless substance known as PTC (phenylthiocarbamide). Students form a pedigree for their individual family; analyze class data to determine whether the gene for tasting

PTC is autosomal, dominant or recessive; calculate the frequency of the recessive and dominant genes and genotypes for their class; and use the Hardy Weinberg Theory to predict the frequency of the genotypes in a large population.

Includes materials for seven student groups — 400 strips of PTC taste paper and a teacher’s guide with instructions and reproducible student worksheets.
