Product Information

The German physician Robert Koch (1843-1910) established a procedure for identifying a pathogen responsible for a specific disease. Known today as Koch’s Postulates, the four steps are as follows:

1) Find the suspected bacteria in all cases of the disease and demonstrate the bacteria’s absence in healthy animals.
2) Isolate the microorganisms in pure culture.
3) Reproduce the same disease in suitable experimental animals.
4) Reisolate the same microorganism from the artificially infected animal.

Students will safely demonstrate Koch’s postulates using a common fruit disease-green mold of an orange. Includes: one culture freeze-dried Penicillium notatum, two bottles potato dextrose agar, twelve 100 mm sterile petri dishes, 20 sterile cotton swabs, 12 plastic bags, 12 toothpicks, 30 student guides and a teacher’s guide with detailed procedures and questions for discussion.
