Product Information

This CD-ROM course is a combination of video lessons and lab demonstrations, interactive exercises, actual case files, and a true-to-life crime scene investigation. Coupled with a Forensic Science Unit Training Manual that is packed with critical thinking exercises and hands-on lab activities, this course is a comprehensive introduction to the fascinating world of forensic science.
Each module includes video instruction by Marilyn Miller, Professor of Forensic Science at the University of New Haven. Professor Miller takes you into her crime lab and introduces you to the major concepts and terminology used by forensic scientists in criminal investigations. Throughout the course, Professor Miller demonstrates techniques used to locate, analyze, and preserve physical evidence.
Interactive exercises in each module provide a fun and engaging way for you to put your forensic science knowledge and skills to work. You'll have an opportunity to identify fingerprint patterns, analyze bloodstain patterns, and determine fiber types by testing with virtual chemical reagents. The training manual gives you a chance to take the skills you've learned to the next level. Critical thinking exercises ask you to analyze and write about some tough issues that relate to the field. You will also be asked to complete labs with items found in your home or in the lab kit provided with the course. At the end of the investigation, you'll have the chance to send in a portion of your work to be recognized by Duke University as a super sleuth.
The course culminates with a Solve the Crime module. You will have to rely on the information you have learned throughout the CD to solve a true-to-life homicide. Your investigation will be guided by a search for evidence, and a series of questions about that evidence. A sequence of lab reports will track your progress in the case. Do those fingerprints and footwear impressions belong to a suspect or the victim? You may know who the killer is, but will you have enough evidence to convict him in court?
