Using the same methods and scientific principles as real-world engineers, students will investigate conservation of momentum and calculate change in velocity to discover how an elastic bumper affects the crashes between a light and heavy cart. Carts are placed on the inclined plane, with front and back bumpers that demonstrate elastic and inelastic collisions. A mounting post allows weight plates to be added to change the variables between experiments.When a photogate is attached to the sliding fence, students can then gather accurate velocity data and compare their real calculations to theoretical value.
