Challenge students’ knowledge of energy and momentum transfers during collisions by introducing a discrepant event to the equation. This demonstration consists of a track with a catch net at one end, a neodymium magnet, and seven steel balls. When you use the track to perform a traditional demonstration of conservation of energy and momentum, results meet student predictions; but, when the neodymium magnet is introduced to the track as a barrier, the seemingly illogical results will encourage students to develop new hypothesis of momentum and energy.
