Dr. Russ Hill developed these terrific magnetic lessons for his students, to implement GLAD (guided language acquisition) strategies in his middle school science classroom. While using these magnetic lessons on the white board, your students take brief notes. Then, as you continue to discuss the lesson, students come up to the board and manipulate the words and concepts, create a word wall, and more. As an additional review, students work in groups and continue manipulating the ideas and terms with the provided reproducible paper sheets, quizzing each other on words and definitions. As students work you can travel between groups and quiz each, gaining immediate feedback and assessment, while students learn through play.

Choose between two comprehensive lessons covering either Earth layers or earthquakes. The earthquakes version presents a variety of topics, including wave types, epicenters, focus, Moho, Shadow Zone, outer core, and much more. The Earth layers lesson provides a visual representation of the various strata of Earth’s structure. The activity requires some cutting with scissors or paper cutter, and provides enough materials for your entire class. Includes teacher’s guide with reproducible student lesson and quizzes. For grades 5–9.
