Strikingly different in approach, this demonstration uses the analogy of houses staggered on a hillside to present the relationship of electron configuration notation to the probability location and energies of electrons. Individual houses symbolize the orbits of the principal quantum number, the floors within each house the sublevels of the second quantum number, and rooms on a given floor the orbitals of the third quantum number. Up and down arrows placed in the individual rooms bring the fourth quantum number (spin) into play. Discussions of Aufbau diagrams, Hund's rule, the Pauli exclusion principal, and electrons come to life with this creative learning aid. Developed by Anthony Garofalo. Includes instructions.
