Product Information

This apparatus allows students to gather direct, experimental evidence for the quantization of electron energy levels in neon atoms. Traditionally, this experiment uses an electron beam of variable, known energy to bombard atoms of hot mercury vapor. This requires strict temperature and voltage control in order to attain the desired results. However, with safety in mind, neon is used instead of mercury. Because of this the experiment can be performed at room temperature. Also, with neon, the quantum transitions lie in the visible frequency range so a discharge pattern in the evacuated experiment tube can be seen and correlated with the pattern of the electronic signal.

Device comes complete with shielded, mounted neon tube, a control unit that supplies voltage, and signal outputs, a set of cables, and a manual. The control unit allows the user to control the output voltage manually enabling the user to to collect data with two regular multimeters in place of an oscilloscope. Operates on 110V/60Hz. Tube housing size is 23.5 x 23 x 17.5cm.
