Product Information

This ingenious device allows you to demonstrate the construction and operation principle behind AC and DC generators. Simply turn the handwheel and the included bulb will light up.
The generator is a permanent-magnet rotating armature generator. When the two brushes of the generator are put in the two ends of the commutator, the output is an alternating current. When the brushes are put in the middle of the commutator, the output is a direct current.

We used the generator to evaluate the effectivness of various wind turbine designes. After modifying the hand cranking with a direct shaft, the machine was perfect.

I purchased this product to demonstrate electric generator properties to my introductory physical science class at the liberal arts college I teach at. The unit performed as advertised. It is very easy to explain the parts, particularly because the top of the stationary magnet can be removed to show the armature. This unit can even operate as a motor with low voltage DC or AC. However, it generates a lot of heat, so don't operate it for very long.
