If a field trip to Pisa, Italy is not in your budget this year, you need to consider this simple but dramatic device.
Students stack four slugs of different materials onto a 6.4mm diameter. metal pin using various combinations. After weighing, and measuring the diameter and height of each slug, students calculate the center of gravity, then place the stack on an inclined plane that is gradually tilted until the assembly topples. Students calculate the angle of incline, and figure out how to prevent the tower from falling over.
