Product Information
Give your students the framework they need to understand algebra. This manipulative contains three lesson plans that build on one another. Each lesson has a step-by-step procedure and color coded teacher narrative to guide you. Throughout each lesson, your entire class will take turns as Calculators who handle the number square and do what the expression tells them. The Mathematicians change what the expression says and the rest of your class will be engaged observers. Concepts covered include symbol, expression, inverse, commutation, theorem, truth, unknown, solving an equation, and use of parenthes. Students begin by learning the algebraic terminology using color-coded symbols in place of numbers to learn the steps they have to follow to solve an equation through manipulation and balancing or using order of operations to solve equations. Lessons then introduce numbers gradually until students master the concepts. Developed by teacher, Kent Erickson. Includes instructions. Grades 4–8.
