Product Information

This lab takes advantage of the special properties of gels that enable us to color-mark the electron path in solutions. In the electrolytic reaction, iron electrodes are immersed in agar gel. With current provided by a 9V battery, the iron is oxidized at the anode while water molecules are reduced at the cathode.

In the voltaic reaction, a single nail is immersed in the gel. The oxidation-reduction processes can be followed by observing the color that develops.

Includes two petri dishes containing agar gel, two iron nails, one 9V battery, one coiled magnesium strip, alcohol pad, disposal bag, gloves, and instructions.
