Plants and animals are constantly experiencing changing osmotic conditions and must adapt to survive in their environment. With this simple experiment, students investigate the effects of plasmolysis on plant cell structure by causing plasmolysis to occur in the cells of an onion. The dramatic effect of varying osmotic conditions on plant structure is clearly visible, explaining the process responsible for causing a plant to wilt when it needs water and “come back to life” when it receives that water.
