The String Launcher is an innovative motorized device developed by Bruce Yeany that uses an eight foot string loop propelled by two motorized wheels to provide teachers with a visually-effective, interest-holding way to demonstrate inertia, gravity, friction, and other important physical concepts.
Position the String Launcher on any smooth surface. Stretch the string loop out onto the surface and turn the handle so that the projected string will launch forward at about a 20 degree angle. Turn on the motors and the string is propelled forward by two wheels at lengths of up to eight feet.
Being a continous loop the string constantly returns to its original point of projection. The speed of the string can also be calculated. As the string becomes worn or is made fuzzy, the flight characteristics of the string change due to an increase in friction. Students can compare the flight characteristics of a worn loop to those of a new loop.
