How can loads of laundry and lush lawns lead to choked ponds and fish kills? Using nitrogen-based pollutants (commonly found in fertilizers), and phosphorus-based pollutants (commonly found in laundry detergents), students will create and analyze an algal bloom in a test tube. Includes materials for seven student groups: nitrate pollutant (1.25%), phosphate pollutant (1.25%), test containers, pipets, microscope slides, cover slips, labels and a teacher’s guide with answers, a reproducible student guide, background information, step-by-step procedures, hand-in worksheets and suggestions for further investigations.
Please note: A microscope with at least 400x magnification and untreated freshwater samples and/or green algae cultures are required, but not included.
