Coralline Algae Study Kit
|
Product Information
Teach your students about misleading appearances and classification with this unusual algae. This crustose specimen (Coralline Algae, a red algae from the family Corallinaceae) attaches itself to the shell of a dead bivalve and incorporates the calcium carbonate, making the algae resemble a coral. The specimen often has an interesting egg-like shape due to constant rolling with the tides and currents on the bottom of the ocean floor. In addition, each algae is home to dozens of marine invertebrates such as scale worms, brittle stars, periwinkles, and sponges. Simply soak the algae in isopropyl alcohol to extract these tiny invertebrates for study under a microscope. This set is recommended for students in grades 7–12. Includes: three Coralline specimens and a detailed teacher’s guide with recommended student activities.
