Exploring Mechanical Weathering Kit
|
Product Information
Mechanical weathering is the breakdown of rock into particles without changing the identities of the minerals in the rock. It is a slow, continuous process that affects all substances exposed to the atmosphere. Temperature, frost action, organic activity, abrasion and ice are some of these “mechanisms”. Students re-create the processes of mechanical weathering, observing what happens to different rock samples when each is shaken and abraded in water. As mechanical weathering contributes further to the breakdown of rock by increasing the surface area exposed to chemical agents, this lab makes an excellent companion to our Chemical Weathering Lab. Includes teacher’s guide and worksheet copymasters.
