Students can quantitatively verify Newton’s second law of motion, including the determination for a constant mass, acceleration is proportional to force (F=ma). Designed for use with our Deluxe Dynamics Carts and Aluminum Dynamics Cart Track, this unique apparatus employs Hooke’s Law to measure certain variables such as the stretch of spring (x) is proportional to applied force (F=Kx).

A line is passed through the running block, suspended by a coil spring, and attached to a dynamics cart; various masses are attached to the other end of the line after it is run through the pulley assembly. The gravitational acceleration of the falling weights exerts tension on the cart, and the amount of this force can be calculated from the extension of the spring using the graduated scale (20 cm/1 mm divisions). The mass of falling weight can be varied, allowing students to investigate the relation of spring expansion and cart acceleration.

Made from aluminum, the unit stands 49 cm high and attaches to any level surface with a C-clamp, available separately. Pulley line with hook and a set of four 50g, five 5g, and five 1g masses are included.
