In this kit, students explore conjugation between 2 strains of E. coli ( resistant to different antibiotics) by growing them on media containing different antibiotics and, following recombination, doing cultures to determine which was the donor and which the recipient, and whether plasmid DNA or chromosomal DNA was involved. The activities require 3 days to complete. The media are easy to use, simply pour into the pretreated Petri dishes and allow to solidify.

Includes materials for 6 groups of students; 30 bottles of Easygel media which require refrigeration or freezing (6 plain nutrient, 6 streptomycin nutrient, 6 ampicillin nutrient, 6 naladoxic acid nutrient, 6 streptomycin plus ampicillin nutrient); 30 Easygel pretreated Petri dishes; 18 sterile swabs; 2 E. coli cultures with different antibiotic resistance; teacher's guide; and student worksheet.
