Product Information

Appropriate for Grades K-6
How do we know if something is alive?

Using a wind up toy as an example, the teacher guides a discussion in which the class comes up with a list of characteristics that something must have in order to be considered living. Students are given a mystery object that they examine, measure, and perform a simple experiment on and then use their observations and data to decide if it is alive. Covers the characteristics of living things, measurement, using science tools, experimentation, and developing science process skills.
Includes Cat's Eyes, vinegar, petri dishes, forceps, magnifying lenses, rulers, a wind-up toy animal, instructions, and a color photo of Cat's Eyes. Enough materials for a class of 30 working in pairs and includes activities for Grades K-2 and 3-6. Developed by Dr. Ronald Takata.
