Aztec Dye Cochineal Kit (Teacher-Developed, Classroom-Tested)
|
Product Information
This one-of-a-kind kit, developed by teacher Helen Mebane, blends chromatography and biology with history and culture in a hands-on learning experience students won’t soon forget. Cochineal is a red dye, developed by the Aztecs, that is made from the dried bodies of an insect. It was introduced to Europe by Cortez, where it was used, among other things, to dye British “Redcoat” uniforms. Today, it is used in foods in place of Red Dye #7. Includes materials for 30 student groups, instructions, and a set of pictograms about Aztec life. Grades 5–10.
