Usually work is studied as motion in one dimension with a constant force. But what about motion in one dimension with a variable force? One of the simplest but most important examples of this is work done by a spring. This kit includes spring scales of three different ranges (10N, 20N, and 30N). In the laboratory experiment, students will find the approximate work done in setting a mousetrap arm with a variable force by measuring the area under the curve described by the graph of F vs. x. Students will then calculate the potential energy of the spring and, from this, find the velocity of the mousetrap bar as it strikes a mouse (or a table, in this case). In this kit developed by Michael Sinclair, students will need to have a working knowledge of trigonometry in order to perform the calculations. The activity can be completed in a single class period by five student groups. Includes instructions and an extra mousetrap, so that the arm can be removed for weighing and measuring. Grades 10–12.
