Simple Induction Motor Demonstrator
|
Product Information
These "cylinders on a string" are a great way to vividly demonstrate simple electromagnetic induction. Two cylindrical magnets are attached to springs. When one of the springs is set in motion, the magnet bounces in and out of a solenoid directly below. The current generated flows through the leads to the other solenoid, causing the second magnet to begin oscillating in phase or 90° out of phase. When the leads are switched (thereby changing the polarity) and the demonstration is repeated, the magnets will oscillate in the opposite phase.
This kit includes everything you need to assemble a simple induction motor, including solenoids, magnets, springs, hook collars, and leads with alligator clips. Easy assembly instructions and a discussion of results are also included. A frame for the unit is required-we suggest using two support stands with rods at least 48 cm high, two right-angle clamp holders, and a non-conductive crossbar (such as a wooden dowel), approximately 60 x 1.5 cm. Grades 10-12. Developed by Bruce Yeany.
