Deep inside the Earth, crystals like Quartz or Amethyst grow when hot aqueous solutions of silicon dioxide cool down.
The Space Age Crystal Globe® allows your students to observe a very similar process for themselves, as crystals of monoammonium phosphate partially dissolve, then regrow right before their eyes!
You begin by placing the globe in direct sunlight for a few hours or some other heat source. This causes the crystals to dissolve. The higher the heat, the more crystals will dissolve. You then let the globe cool and as it does, the crystals will begin to regrow. The lower the room temperature, the more crystals.
By varying the heat source and/or the cooling process, you can repeat this experiment countless times, and each time the results will be different.
