Students predict and measure strike-slip fault movement using wooden models of the San Andreas fault and pieces of spaghetti that simulate locked segments of rock along the fault. After predicting the number of strands of pasta that will result in the greatest movement, students perform four trials for each strand of pasta added, measuring the distance the block moves. Seven student models measure 31 cm x 11 cm. Developed by Tom Derrico. Includes instructions. Grades 6–10. Includes 7 California strike-slip fault models, instructions, teacher's guide, reproducible student guide. Additional materials needed but not included: Box of angel hair spaghetti, Metric rulers, Calculators (optional). Additional models are also available.
