When salicylic acid, acetic anhydride, and sulfuric acid are mixed in a reaction vessel the resulting exothermic reaction will cause the temperature to increase to 70–80°C. Once the reaction is complete the vessel is cooled in an ice bath and the acetylsalicylic crystallizes out. This material is re-crystallized in toluene to purify the product, and the identity is then confirmed by determining the melting point. The mass of the re-crystallized product is used to determine the yield of the synthesis. This experiment can be completed in 60 minutes and comes with enough materials for 15 setups. The Pyrex Micro-Organic Chemistry set or Combo-Still is required, available separately.
