Students observe the activities of bacterial enzymes by taking microorganisms from soil and introducing them to different media.
As the enzymes digest the substrates, students learn how enzymes speed up chemical reactions. The enzymes in this lab include catalase, amylase, carbohydrase, cysteinase and protease. Developed by Edward Alcamo.
Includes: petri dishes, nutrient agar, toothpicks, pipets, Gram's iodine, hydrogen peroxide, sim medium, phenol red lactose broth with Durham tubes, starch agar, bleach, cotton swabs, test tubes, a marker and a teacher's guide with background information.
