The Human Genome: Who owns the Book of Life? is one in a series of programs developed to promote discussion and critical thinking in the classroom. Each program contains a 15-20 minute video, a poster pertaining to the topic addressed in the video, a teacher's guide, and regularly updated information on the publisher's web site.
The mapping of the human genome is an important milestone in the history of the medical sciences. In this program, students are challenged to consider the implications of a science that may enable scientists and medical doctors to change nature through the altering of genes. If we can change nature, and do, how will this affect the human race? The supporting materials were designed to help students focus on a few of the major moral issues surrounding the genome project, and to help students understand some of the scientific aspects of genetics. The 12-page teacher's guide includes a readiness activiity that is done before viewing the video, post-program discussion questions, and reproducible activity sheets with follow-up class discussion questions. The poster provides at-a-glance quick facts about &"The Molecule of Life&" DNA. Video is 18 minutes.
