The Moon Phaser is a plastic sphere with one side white; the other black. Inside is a light source. It was designed to be used to demonstrate the lunar cycle in a striking and uniquely visual way. It comes with an extension handle for open-space large group demonstrations.
The lesson begins with students completing "The Inconstant Moon" activity which introduces the terms "phases of the moon", "lunar cycle", "new moon", waxing crescent" etc. Following this, students take their seats in 30 chairs that have been arranged in an elliptical formation around a swivel chair that represents the Earth. One wall is designated the Sun. After turning off the lights, the teacher walks around the chairs with the Moon Phaser with the dark side facing the "Earth". Each student is asked to describe the moon they are seeing. The demonstration is continued until one lunar day is completed. Finally students are asked to explain what they have seen and why they believe the Moon changes phases.
