Discover Why a Jellyfish Glows
Students learn how transformed cells take up a plasmid containing the GFP gene using a gene isolated from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria. Visibly green in normal light, colonies expressing the GFP protein will fluoresce brightly when exposed to long wave UV light. Kit includes cells, plasmid DNA, IPTG, ampicillin, transformation solution, ReadyPour™ agar, Luria broth, petri dishes, sterile pipettes, loops, microtubes, and detailed instructions.
Requires a waterbath, 37ºC incubation oven, and long wave UV lamp. Materials provided for ten lab groups. Time requirements: Set Up & Plating: 50 min.;
Incubation: Overnight; Transformation: 15 min.
