An innovative alternative to traditional dissections, this V-Frog™ software offers virtual reality-based frog dissection designed specifically for biology education. Using a simple mouse and basic personal computer, a student can pick up a scalpel; cut and open the skin of the frog; explore anatomy, physiology, and evolution, just like with a physical frog. The 3-D navigation makes the experience quite realistic, while students choose from dissection, probing, and endoscoping functions. The activation feature also allows students to view a beating heart, digestion, and much more. An organ and tissue query helps students locate specific structures, and a comparative anatomy function aids in differentation. This software was developed through a competitive funding from the U.S. Department of Education.
