Constructing their own vehicle to meet set design requirements, students master the skills of organizing, recording, and analyzing data from physics experiments; using flat materials to create 3-D objects; and working from a plan.

The series of activities in this comprehensive design technology unit is presented in a student-friendly sequence. Working over numerous class periods, you will begin by working with provided materials to build your own vehicle, test its performance, redesign the vehicle to minimize friction while maximizing distance, and explore the effect of different loads on the distance travelled by the vehicle.

Key concepts of motion and force are explored as well as mathematical standards of angles, variables, and measurements.

Includes enough materials for 16 student groups to each make 2 vehicles and a detailed instructor’s guide with background information, step-by-step experiments, comprehension questions, and assessment guidelines.
