Make the explanation of Relative Humidty easy to understand with this simple but very effective demonstration. Your students will understand relative humidity as it pertains to air temperature.Water capacity and volume of the air increases with an increase in air temperature. However, air density decreases with air temperature.Using this information the leeward and wayward sides of a mountain or the Orographic Effect can be explained. As the air is forced upward over a mountain range, it cools causing water vapor to condense and rain out. As the air flows down the other side of the mountain it warms promoting evaporation and creating a desert climate. Developed by Tom Hoolihan. Grades 8-10.
Kit includes: orographic effect poster, beakers, index cards, blue food coloring, aquarium bowl, blackline transparencies, and instructions.
Additional materials required, but not included: ring stands, rings, cardboard, tape, markers, and an overhead projector.
