What Happened at Lake Nyos? Kit
|
Product Information
In 1986, a deadly cloud of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas was released from Lake Nyos, a rare volcanic lake, in Cameroon, West Africa. Traveling as far as 15 miles, over 1,700 people and 6,000 head of livestock were killed. Nearly 15 years later the debate continues on the cause of the release. In this lab, students recreate the conditions at Lake Nyos, seeking to discover the geologic reasons behind the disaster. Includes materials for five student groups, a plastic volcano model, teacher’s guide, and student worksheet copymasters.
